Pregnancy & New born photography

Everything you need to know to prepare for your shoot.

By Anika Diaz

Hi, I’m Anni!
I was born in Germany but moved to Perth when I was 22 after falling in love with a boy who is now my husband and father to our 2 children and German Shepherd dog Lina. I studied my advanced diploma of Photography over 12 years ago, following my dad’s footsteps who has always been a keen Photographer. As a child, I often found it a little annoying that at every family party we were at, my dad got his camera out and started posing people. But guess what, years later as an adult, I will forever be grateful that he did exactly that.

A bit more about me as a person cause if you’re anything like me, I don’t care too much for credentials but about who that person is inside and what makes me connect with them! I am both an introvert and an extrovert and I feed off people’s energy around me.

When my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer 12 years ago, it changed our life forever but for the better.

We are living a low-tox and very conscious life, eat mainly plant based and it made me question things that have led us onto a beautiful path and I have made lifelong friends that share the same values which is so special.

I don’t like confrontation but I do stand up for what I believe in. I am an empath and an animal lover and have always wanted to grow my own veggies but other than a bunch of kale and some tomatoes, I have not succeeded yet. However, I know I will. One day 😉
I love to laugh but I easily cry as I am a very emotional person. There is nothing hidden with me, what you see is what you get and I wear my heart on my sleeve.

If you are after an experience where you don’t need to feel rushed, embarrassed for your kids behavior and truly understood and valued by the person taking your photos, get in contact with me.

I can’t wait to meet you and your family and learn all about you and capture your most precious moments together.

Much love, Anni xoxo

Style Guide – What not to wear

  1. Skip logos and words as they draw the eye towards them.
  2. Avoid neon colours or busy graphics and prints. We want you and your loved ones face to be the centre of attention, not distracting clothing.
  3. Footwear – try to avoid thongs and bulky sneakers that look like running shoes.

We want you to be comfortable and look your best so that you love looking back on these memories for years to come. In my experience, it is best to avoid these clothing items to ensure the best possible results.

Style Guide – What to wear
Comfort

Dress for comfort. Photo shoots with kids often involve some movement like dancing or running or playing games if you’re in the mood, so your clothing needs to be something that you can move in.
You are welcome to bring a spare piece of clothing for an outfit change.

Patterns & Texture

If picking patterns, choose smaller designs that won’t grab the audiences eye from the main subject. The key is to only put ONE person in a pattern, texture on the other hand I LOVE!! It adds so much character and depth to a photo; some examples are knits, lace, denim and ruffles. Layers are also a great way to add pattern and texture to your photos…a cosy cardigan, scarf, beanie, hats, jackets or boots are some other examples that make your photos pop.

Colours

I love gentle colours and pastels most but I am also a huge colour fan. You may like to select your outfits based on the location you choose. For example, neutrals for the beach or golden field or autumn colours like reds and mustard work well with greenery.

Consider your home décor colours too. If you have a lot of neutrals in your home, you may like to break it up with colour in your photos. If you have a few colours and textures in your house, perhaps consider a more neutral or plain palate. Your photos will end up on your walls afterall.

Co-ordinate

It must sound strange to envision clothing and colours together that are not matching. I have an eye for which colours work well together, so do a flatlay of the chosen outfits and send me a photo and I can suggest an alternative if needed. Always have one person that sets the colour trend for the rest of the group. I always say dress mum/adult female first, because let’s face it, it takes us the longest to find the perfect outfit

Shoots with Kids

Family photo sessions can get stressful and daunting but with some preparation and a lot of patience, your photo session will be an enjoyable experience for the entire family. Let’s try our best to make this experience as stress free for you as possible.

Prep your kids in advance

Tell your kids about the photo shoot well ahead of time. Tell them what to expect and how much you can’t wait for this experience. They will feed off your excitement and will not want to miss out!

Involve your kids

Include your children in the planning process. Help them pick out an outfit for themselves (You want to make sure it only includes outfits you actually want them to wear, otherwise
there might be tears!) We know that it’s all about involving children and they love to help and the more they do it, the happier they will play along on the day.

Bring Backup

Make sure you’re well prepared for photo shoot day. Bring along a change of clothes, plenty of snacks, water, diapers, etc. MAKE IT FUN! Make photo shoot day a special occasion! Plan on doing something fun after the session so they look forward to the outing all day eg taking them to the nearby playground or for their favourite dinner or treat. A bit of bribing has never harmed anyone on the day hehe.
